Throughout the response to the 2016 screwworm outbreak in the Florida Keys, USDA entomologists monitored and tracked the levels of fertile screwworm flies. An effective attractant was rotting liver, often from deceased Key deer that had fallen to screwworm infestations during the outbreak.
