sterile screwworm fly ground release chamber setup
Steven Skoda, Pamela Phillips, and John Welch spearheaded the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s emergency response to the outbreak of screwworm flies in the Florida Keys in 2016. The outbreak was eradicated through use of the sterile insect technique, in which millions of sterilized screwworm flies (Cochliomyia hominivorax) were released from 30 ground release chambers (shown here) over the course of several weeks.
