A food-grade gum substance shows promise as a new tool for managing the invasive spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii), as reported in a new study published in April 2020 in the Journal of Economic Entomology. The delivery system presented in the paper involves a hanging microfiber cloth smeared with the gum, but the researchers say they have come up with an even more effective method since the paper was submitted for publication. The second method uses a biodegradable pad of hemp fiber. “It can be easily deployed by growers at the base of the plants, in contact with the drip irrigation system” at an optimal ratio of 50 pads per acre, says the lead researcher.
