In a study on the capacity of several lady beetle species to regenerate limbs during their pupal stage, the multicolored Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis, adult shown here) was among those that displayed the trait most frequently, with 98 percent of the individuals examined in the experiment showing some limb regeneration. The researchers say the trait may be linked to genes that offer survival advantages when activated, but further study is needed. (Photo by Daren Mueller, Iowa State University, Bugwood.org)
