Cryptocteniza kawtak

Cryptocteniza kawtak

A new genus and species of trapdoor spider, Cryptocteniza kawtak inhabits a limited area in Moss Landing State Beach in California. The species epithet kawtak means “seashore” in the language of Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, who originally inhabited the lands near the spider’s habitat.  (Photo by Jason Bond, Ph.D.)
