Tetranychus ludeni mite

Research on the reproductive behavior of Tetranychus ludeni mites finds they can successfully inbreed over at least 11 generations without showing evidence of reduced fitness. This haplodiploid reproduction may help explain why T. ludeni mites have successfully invaded so many different habitats—and may help entomologists better predict and manage biological invasions by other haplodiploid arthropods. Here, a T. ludeni mite is shown under a microscope view, being transferred with a fine brush in the course of a lab study. (Photo by Peng Zhou)
