John Cooley, Ph.D.

University of Connecticut-Hartford entomologist John Cooley, Ph.D., spends a good part of his summers driving around the eastern United States and listening for the high-pitched calls of male periodical cicadas (one of which is shown here perched on Cooley’s hand). He is lead author of a just-published article that details a new approach to mapping broods, or mass emergences, of cicadas. This mapping approach will help researchers determine whether brood ranges are shifting due to climate change or other causes. (Photo courtesy of John Cooley, Ph.D.)
