Rachael Winfree, Ph.D., professor of ecology, evolution, and natural resources at Rutgers University, and her research group recently published the results of a comprehensive study into a long-overlooked group of insects: spring-flying, wildflower-pollinating, native bees. The study classified more than three dozen species of bees in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York as forest-associated and also tracked diversity and abundance of forest bees over more than a century. Here, Winfree, examines a bee in a forest habitat. (Photo by Jack Rabin)
