pupal case remains

In a study looking at factors that drive survival of silverspotted skippers (Epargyreus clarus) in their pupal stage, researchers found that many pupae removed from their shelters were at higher risk of death during summer months, likely due to predation rodents and birds. Shown here is the remains of a pupal case. (Photo by Martha Weiss, Ph.D.)
