Monday plenary speakers

Entomologists were challenged to expand their thinking about what science is and ought to be in Monday’s Plenary Session at the 2022 Joint Annual Meeting of ESA, ESC, and ESBC. Tara McAllister, Ph.D. (left), a Māori scientist studying freshwater ecology as well as underrepresentation of Indigenous scholars in academia at the Centre for Science and Society at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand; and Michael Blackstock, an artist and independent Indigenous scholar and a member of the Gitxsan Nation, delivered presentations on Indigenous science and urged conference attendees to build connections with Indigenous researchers and bridge gaps between Western scientific practices and Indigenous knowledge systems. Also pictured is Bill Riel, Ph.D., past president of the Entomological Society of Canada, who moderated Q&A with the speakers.
