hibiscus mealybug citrus infestation

closeup of a green citrus fruit half covered with small white dusty mealybugs and elsewhere covered in a black sooty substance.

Hibiscus mealybug (Nipaecoccus viridis) is a mealybug known by many names across the world and is regionally referred to as the “lebbeck mealybug” in Florida. There, this mealybug is emerging as a multi-crop pest, though it is currently restricted to Florida. Shown here is a citrus fruit heavily infested with hibiscus mealybug. One potentially predatory lady beetle is present on the left side of the fruit. (Photo by Lauren Diepenbrock, Ph.D.)
