diagram graphical abstract

Cycle diagram depicting four stages. At left, a male and female fly face each other with a heart symbol above them. At the top, a female fly lays eggs in an open wound of a deer. At right, fly larva appear in the wound. At bottom, leaf litter and dirt lay on the ground, with a circle inset showing a fly larva closeup.

Figure 1. This diagram graphical abstract was designed using Biorender. A detail that workshop attendees were quick to point out is that the use of a house fly depicted could cause confusion for expert audiences, and an image of a primary screwworm would improve the graphic. However, the message of the life cycle was communicated. This image was used to open dialogue on accuracy, and the heart above the male and female flies having cultural underpinned meanings of romance was also discussed.
