Amauromyza karli pupa

Closeup of a fly pupa, oval in shape and amber in color, against a medium-gray background.

It has not yet been confirmed, but, based on the biology of other stem-boring flies in this family, it is likely that Amauromyza karli larvae chew an exit hole and leave the plant stem to spend their pupal stage (shown here) in the soil. (Photo courtesy of Ada Szczepaniec, Ph.D.)
