Mosquito sample in lab

Over-the-shoulder view looking at a petri dish lit brightly under a microscope, with mosquitoes collected from a trap in the dish. Two hands in blue rubber gloves hold tweezers just above the dish.

In 2020, when Canadian researchers were looking for viruses and other microbes spread by mosquitoes, they found black queen cell virus, known for afflicting honey bees (Apis mellifera). It is the first time BQCV has been discovered in North American mosquitoes, and, also for the first time, researchers sequenced the BQCV genome. (Photo courtesy of Bryan Cassone, Ph.D.)
