gloomy scales and ladybug

Gloomy scales (Melanaspis tenebricosa) can be dense on urban red maple trees. One scale in the center of the image has its outer cover removed. Right: Scales attract predators such as this minute lady beetle (Microweisea sp.) by directly acting as prey or by attracting other prey species that feed on scale honeydew.
