A new study by researchers in Florida finds that male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes live longer when irradiated as adults rather than pupae, an important advance in protocols for deploying the sterile insect technique to manage wild populations of disease-transmitting mosquitoes. The irradiation step in the sterile insect technique can be conducted with an X-ray machine such as this Radsource 2400V used by the Lee County (Florida) Mosquito Control District.
