Nipaecoccus viridis ehtanol color test

Figure on a white background: At left, a mealybug specimen labeled Adult Female, with two blackarrows point away from it to the right, one upward at a 45 degree angle and one downward at a 45 degree angle. The top arrow points to an image of a small circular dish with clear liquid and three small black dots inside, below which appears a lable reading "Soaked in 75% EtOH." The bottom arrow points to a similar dish what has red liquid and one small black dot inside, below which appears a lable reading "Crushed in 75% EtOH." Another black arrow points horizontally to the right from each dish. The top arrow points to a closeup of a mealybug that is dark black in color after the color test, labeled "Black Body." The bottom arrow points to a mealybug also dark in color, labled "Dark Puple Hemolymph."

A color test of adult female Nipaecoccus viridis and its hemolymph in 75 percent ethanol (EtOH) results in red ethanol and dark purple hemolymph; however, several other mealybug species in Florida elicit the same result.
