Berlese funnels

One way to gather ticks from the soil is with Berlese funnels (shown here). Soil is placed into a lighted funnel, causing any soil-dwelling ticks (and other invertebrates) to burrow deeper until they fall out of the bottom of the funnel and into a small receptacle.
