From 1999 through 2018, Lawrence Hurd, Ph.D., a professor of biology at Washington and Lee University, and his ecology lab students trekked to a nearby field in mid-September every year to measure the population of Chinese mantids (Tenodera aridifolia sinensis). Results of the study published in Annals of the Entomological Society of America illustrate the potential double whammy of habitat loss (even a naturally occurring one) and climate change.
