grasshopper traps
To catch wild Ruspolia differens grasshoppers, traps are set up during swarming season (November to December and March to May). The traps use bright lights to attract the grasshoppers, which then slide down large metal sheets into drums. A team of researchers has designed a new trap that improves on the traditional model by reducing nontarget bycatch, energy consumption, and use of hazardous materials.
