Helen Roy in China
The native range of harlequin ladybirds (Harmonia axyridis) is China (where Helen Roy, Ph.D. is shown here), but they arrived in the U.K. more than a decade ago and now constitute about 80-90 percent of the ladybirds in urban areas of England. Although the beetles have few natural enemies in the U.K., some have recently been shown to be infected with a small, sexually transmitted fungus, Hesperomyces virescens. (Photo credit: Peter Brown)
