In her doctoral research at Lincoln University’s Bio-Protection Research Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, Laura Nixon, Ph.D., led a study to expose brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys) to a lab simulation of the conditions inside shipping containers aboard cargo ships on the voyage from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere. Their goal is to identify volatile compounds emitted by the pests that port inspectors armed with electronic sniffing devices can use to detect them. The team used a robotic arm to simulate the motion of both waves during voyage and loading and unloading at port. (Photo credit: Rob Morrison, Ph.D.)
