Maryland gardener and nature writer Nancy Lawson (The Humane Gardener: Nurturing a Backyard Habitat for Wildlife) spotted a monarch butterfly doing something odd: scratching and sipping at the dried leaf of a boneset plant. The sighting led to a scientific paper and the new citizen-science effort Monarch Rx, encouraging others to report similar observations. Lawson is shown here with more typical butterfly behavior: two tiger swallowtails nectaring on Joe Pye weed. (Photo by Ken Koons)
