Pacific cicada killer with cicada

Cicada-killer wasps such as the Pacific cicada killer (Sphecius convallis) get their name from their behavior of capturing and paralyzing cicadas, taking them to underground nests, and laying an egg on the live but immobilized cicada, which the wasp’s larva feeds on when it hatches.
